Swim England Coaching

Swim England are excited to be part of Swim Serpentine again in 2018 and look forward to welcoming both participants and spectators. The National Governing Body for swimming will be offering free coaching sessions with top open water coaches Damien Bryan and Gareth Keating as well as free family fun sessions for families with children aged eight years and over.

Free technique clinics

Both coaches will be on hand all day on Saturday 22 September 2018 in the Hyde Park Lido, providing one-to-one stroke technique sessions for swimmers of all abilities. Why not chat to them about your race, get some top tips and discover how you can improve your swimming technique?

The free one-to-one sessions will offer:

  • A 15-minute review of your stroke, including a full stroke analysis by one of the coaches
  • Individual Training Plan
  • Free wetsuit loan for the session
  • Free goody bag

Meet the coaches

Damien Bryan is a level 3 qualified swim coach with over 15 years’ experience in swimming, open water swimming and competitive swimming. As well as working as a swim coach for many years in London, Damien has more recently been the lead coach on Swim England’s open water performance programmes, while also coaching on Swim England’s pilot project for mass participation in open water swimming.

Gareth Keating is a level 3 qualified swim coach and the current head coach at Saxon Crown swimming club. Gareth has over a decade of coaching behind him and has also been involved in open water swimming both as a swimmer and as a coach.

Free family fun sessions

We’ll lead you and your family through a variety of ‘Discovery Duckling’ inspired games and activities, all based on the Swim England Pre-School and Learn to Swim Frameworks.

The sessions are all about enjoying time in the water, while helping to develop your child’s movement skills and swimming ability, through fun.

The sessions are designed to engage with families and encourage them to have fun in the water. Each session will be made up of a number of specific games and activities designed to improve the children's core aquatic skills and swimming ability.

The sessions will offer:

  • 30-minute instructor lead session
  • Discovery games and activities based on key learning outcomes from the Swim England Learn to Swim framework
  • Free wetsuit loan for the session

Swim England has created two special storybooks – Discovery Duckling and friends and Lucy and Sammy – to help young children to get ready for their first swimming lessons. Parents and carers can use them to show children what the first steps of learning to swim are like. It’s a great way to show how much fun they can have in water from an early age. How to sign up

The technique sessions and family fun sessions are free to both spectators and swimmers at Swim Serpentine on Saturday 22 September. You can sign up on the day at the Swim England’s Coaches Corner, which will be situated in the main staging area in Hyde Park. • 10:00-12:00
  • 13:00-15:00

*Please be aware, all children will require a responsible adult in the water throughout the family fun sessions. Swimmers need to be able to swim a minimum of 400m to take part in the swimming technique sessions.
